ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Bates College men's tennis team opened the 2009 spring season on Thursday with a 7-2 victory over Division II Eckerd College.

The Bobcats (1-0) received points at No. 1 singles from junior Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka), at No. 3 singles from junior captain Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.), at No. 4 singles from first-year Jeff Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.), at No. 5 singles from junior Mike Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), at No. 6 singles from senior Mike Sherman (Huntington, N.Y.), at No. 2 doubles from Rupasinghe and Beaton, and at No. 3 doubles from Reiss and junior Adam Nielson (Den Haag, Netherlands).

Bates will next play at MIT on March 6 at 4 p.m.
