MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Bates College men's swimming team broke five more program records on Saturday at the NESCAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Wesleyan University. With one more day to go in the meet, Bates currently stands in 10th place out of 11 teams.

The meet concluded with the Bobcats setting a new school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as first-year Nathaniel Depew (Hudson, Ohio), junior Jake MacNaughton (Scarsdale, N.Y.), first-year Matt Lipoff (Glencoe, Ill.) and senior Mark Andrews (Cumberland, Maine) finished ninth in 7:09.05, breaking the former school record of 7:11.04 set by Mike Jensen, Nick Kuppens, David Bear and Adam Bowden in 2001. Depew's leadoff leg of 1:44.46 beat David Fox's 1993 Bates record of 1:44.58 in the 200 freestyle.

The Bobcats also broke the school record in the 200 medley relay, as senior Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine), first-year Alex McKeown (South Windsor, Conn.), first-year Ned Scott (Maplewood, N.J.) and first-year Dan Aupi (Branford, Conn.) finished seventh in a time of 1:35.64, beating the former mark of 1:38.03 set by Nate Curll, Adam Eggert, Fisher Qua and Chris Guerette in 2005.

Berry broke his own record in the 100 back for the second time in two days, finishing 10th in the event with a time of 52.29 seconds, an NCAA B-cut qualifying time.

Scott broke Curll's 2005 record of 52.17 seconds in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.68 seconds, which tied him for 10th place at the meet.

Friday Recap

The Bates College men's swimming and diving team competed in their first day of the NESCAC Championship Friday at Wesleyan University and broke six program records. At the end of the first day, Bates stood in ninth place out of 11 teams with 227 points, ahead of Trinity (224.5) and Bowdoin (182).

In the two relay events on the evening, the Bobcat men raced to two impressive seventh-place finishes.

In the first relay event of the evening, the 200-yard freestyle, the Bates team of Chris Berry, sophomore Pat Carroll (North Andover, Mass.) and Dan Aupi and Ned Scott, secured an impressive seventh-place finish out of 20 teams in a time of 1:25.46, half a second better than the previous Bates record of 1:25.96 set by Miles Cobb, Steve Simmons, Paul Urbanczyk and David Blaney on the same date in 1998.

In the second relay event, the 400-yard medley, Berry, Scott, Aupi and Alex McKeown secured the second seventh-place finish out of 21 teams in a time of 3:29.68, smashing the previous Bates record in the event of 3:37.26 set by Andrew O'Donnell, Sao Ohn Hseng, Adam Bowden and Steve Imig in 2002. Berry broke his own record in the 100 backstroke in the leadoff leg of the relay, at 52.98 seconds. The previous mark was 53.30 seconds.

Scott improved upon his team success in the 200-yard freestyle relay with an individual achievement in the 50-yard butterfly final. Scott raced to a sixth-place finish in the finals with a time of 23.14 seconds, taking 0.15 seconds off of the previous Bates record set by Adam Bowden in 2003.

In other swimming action, Berry, Aupi and McKeown also had individual success along with their relay success. Berry just missed the cut for the championship final in the 50-yard backstroke, but swam a blazing 24.14 seconds in the consolation final, bettering his own Bates record of a year ago in the event by 0.52 seconds. He was .03 seconds out of racing in the finals. In the same event, Nathaniel Depew placed 12th with a time of 25.18 seconds.

Aupi placed 11th in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:57.09, snipping 0.56 seconds off of the Bates record set by Damon Bowe in 1997.
