Esponnette highlights standout marks at Open New Englands

BOSTON -- Bates sophomore Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) beat his own personal record by five seconds Saturday in the mile at the all-divisions Open New Englands at Boston University, highlighting an excellent weekend for the Bates men's track and field team at the meet. Esponnette placed 15th in the mile with a time of 4:14.65, meeting the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. Also on Saturday, after qualifying for semifinals in the 55-meter dash on Friday with a preliminary time of 6.64 seconds, , putting him at No. 7 on Bates' all-time performance list, first-year Mike Jiang (Madison, Conn.) finished 13th overall out of an original 30 competitors with a finals time of 6.66. Also on Saturday, the 4x800 relay quartet of senior Mike Watson (Mansfield, Mass.), first-year Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.), first-year Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.) and sophomore Joe Musso (Wallingford, Conn.) finished in 7:54.91, powered by personal-record 200-meter splits by Calandra and Musso, putting them at No. 6 on Bates' all-time performance list. Bates made six changes to the program's all-time performance lists over the meet's two days. "It was just an outstanding weekend for us," said head coach Al Fereshetian. Friday Recap Mike Watson put himself at No. 10 on Bates' all-time performance list in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:32.71. First-year Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.) moved up to No. 3 on Bates' all-time performance list in the pole vault, with a top effort of 14 feet and 9 inches. Finally, the distance medley relay team registered a time of 10:13, placing seventh and putting them at No. 5 on Bates' all-time list. Troy Calandra led off with a 3:12 split in the 1,200 meters, followed by a 48.5-second effort by sophomore Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) in the 400, a 1:56 800 by Peter Corcoran and a 4:16 split in the 1,600-meter leg by Tom Esponnette. |
