Napkin Board Responses

Q:
I enjoyed the 7 grain cereal at breakfast!  It is nice to have variety! Thanks.
A: This is good to hear.

Q: Thank you soo much for having Gelato Fiasco come to give us free gelato!  It was wonderful!  Would it be possible to have it in commons sometimes as a special treat?
A: Glad you enjoyed it.

Q: Could you please get 100% cranberry juice and get rid of the high fructose corn syrup stuff?
A: At this point we are unable to get 100% juice cranberry juice. It is not available in dispenser pack.

Q: Wow, I had no idea there were trans fats here at Bates.  All the food here is so healthy.  I would also like to know what foods have trans fats in them.
A: Yes we do serve healthy food, but at this point in time trans fats are still present in a lot of processed foods. So I would stay away from Twinkies and the likes.

Q: Thank you soooooo much for the Gnocchi at lunch today!  Can we have gnocchi every week?
A: Your welcome.

Q:
Need more cookies at the desert station chocolate chip & raisin...
A: We can look into this.

Q: I understand that it's difficult to supply commons with completely trans fat-free foods. Is it possible that these foods could be labeled, so students can have more security in their food choices? Thanks.
A: We can look into doing this, but to be honest it is an enormous task and will take some time. We just partnered with Hannaford to employ their Guiding Stars algorithm to determine the nutritional soundness of all  items . This algorithm uses a calculation which attaches certain mathematical "weights"- both negative and postitve- to the individual components of items. Once this caculation has been done a rating is attached to that item- no stars, one star, two stars or three stars. One of the major negative items is if the ingredient  is or contains a trans fats. As you know, a simple rule of thumb is stay away from processed foods.

Q: All of the random salads, bean mixes, etc. that are put out on the counter at the vegan bar and are not on the menu are incredible! I'm assuming they usually arise from whatever ingredients are on hand turned into something delicious by the chefs. Please thank them for their creativity!
A: Thanks for the kind words, I will pass this on.

Q: NO trans fats at bates.  Get rid of them all!!!!
A: Please be real. Do you know how many things have trans fat in them. While we are diligent about trying to limit these, they are inherent in so many items this is an impossibility. Compared to our peers we are doing very well.

Q: In the same way that the melon, pineapple, etc., fruit mix is in the salad bar during lunch, is there anyway we might also have (or alternate with the melon mix) the peaches or mandarin oranges or pears that are available at breakfast? thanks!
A: There is fruit mix available every lunch at the vegan bar as is one other single fruit : watermelon for example.

Q:
I meant to mention this a month or so ago when it was offered at the Vegan bar, but the 'Salsa-mole" was one of the greatest things I've tasted.  I haven't seen it since.  Can you please look into this.  It really was fantastic.Thank you,
A: Yes this can happen.

Q: Is there any possibility the blueberry salad dressing offered during lunch at the vegan bar this past monday be offered at the salad station on a regular basis?
A: We can look into this.

April 1st

Q: Hi! I was wondering if it would be possible to get Muligrain Cheerios and Quaker Oatmeal Squares added to the cereal selection? Thanks Commons!
A: No, not at this point.
