April 18,
2009
The Polar Bears scored 230 points, outpacing the host Bobcats, who scored 206 points. The University of Southern Maine was third with 142 points and Colby was fourth with 36. "It was a great meet," said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian. "Bowdoin was a very determined and motivated team and they got the job done in events late in the meet and we just were not able to respond. There were some very good performances for us." Bates, ranked No. 18 in Division III by the USTFCCCA, was led by junior Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.), who claimed the Frederick D. Tootel Memorial Most Valuable Field Athlete Award for placing first in the shot put (50-00.00), discus throw (146-03) and hammer throw (169-01). Also claiming event wins for the Bobcats were sophomore Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) in the 400 meters (49.74 seconds), sophomore Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) in the 1,500 (4:00.94), first-year Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) in the 10,000 (33:47.3) and junior Conor Welch (Newburyport, Mass.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:35.58). Quinn also took third place in the 200 (22.33). Other top-three performances for Bates included: senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.), who finished second in both the high jump (6-01.25) and pole vault (14-03.25); first-year Candido Bousquet (Colombo, Sri Lanka), third in the high jump (5-11.25) and second in the discus throw (143-09); sophomore Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.), second in the 400 hurdles (56.52); sophomore Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.), third in the 5,000 (15:38.70); senior Dillon Tung (South Pasadena, Calif.), third in the 10,000 (33:58.1); first-year Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.), third in the pole vault (14-03.25); senior Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.), second in the hammer (151-04); and sophomore Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.), third in the hammer (150-03). The 4x100 relay team of first-year Mike Jiang (Madison, Conn.), sophomore Pat Carroll (North Andover, Mass.), first-year Nick Marinakis (Reading, Mass.) and Quinn placed second in 43.28 seconds. Bates will compete next Saturday at the NESCAC Championships, to be held at Connecticut College starting at 10 a.m. Team Rankings: Event Winners: |
