LEWISTON, Maine -- Wesleyan University swept a baseball doubleheader from Bates College on Sunday at Leahey Field, winning Game 1 10-0 and taking Game 2 17-7. The Cardinals won their first series at Bates since 1996 two games to one, and raised their record to 15-11 overall while the Bobcats drop to 8-15. The teams play in separate divisions within the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Dusty Mones pitched a complete-game shutout for Wesleyan in Game 1, allowing only two hits and three walks while striking out four to raise his record to 3-2 on the season. Wesleyan scored in every inning but the fifth in the seven-inning contest, including four in the seventh to turn a 6-0 game into 10-0. Jeff Bizinkauskas hit a two-run home run in the seventh, his second of the season. Julian Sonnenfeld was 2-for-2 in the game, scoring three runs and driving in one, while Drew Dominguez went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Sophomore Rich Velotta (Fairfield, Conn.) and first-year Kelvin Gutierrez (New York, N.Y.) had Bates' only hits in the game. Sophomore righthander Paul Chiampa (Bryantville, Mass.; 2-4) started and accepted the loss after lasting four innings and giving up five runs on seven hits and five walks.

In Game 2, Wesleyan jumped on Bates starter Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) with six runs, all unearned, in the first inning, then adding another in the second and three more in the third for a 10-0 lead. Bates got back two runs in the bottom of the third, but Wesleyan tacked on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 15-2 lead, putting away any thoughts of a comeback.

Bates sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) blasted a two-run home run to right field in the eighth, his first career homer. He was 3-for-4 in the game. Sophomore Luke Wamboldt (Sunderland, Mass.) and senior Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, Vt.), both late-game substitutions, each went 2-for-2 with RBIs for Bates.

Bates committed six errors in the game to conspire with 19 Wesleyan hits. Heide (2-3) took the loss, going three innings and allowing 10 runs, only four earned, on 12 hits and a walk. Four pitchers followed Heide for Bates, with only sophomore Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) getting by untouched by tossing a shutout eighth inning.

Jon Sargent (3-0) was the workhorse winner for Wesleyan, going eight innings and allowing seven runs on 13 hits before giving way to James Hounsell in the ninth.

Adam Meadow went 4-for-5 with three runs to pace Wesleyan's 19-hit attack, while Garrett Lamborn went 3-for-5. Dominguez, Sonnenfeld (two doubles), Bizinkauskas and Brandyn Cooper (two doubles) had two hits apiece.
