Ritchie, Waldo named to All-America rowing team

Sophomore Rebecca Waldo (Dracut, Mass.) joined Ritchie for the first time, with a spot on the Second Team. Waldo rows in the fifth seat on the Bates varsity eight, which has earned a No. 2 ranking in Division III by in the CRCA/USRowing poll. "Rebecca displayed her strength and talent immediately las year, and has continued to impress ever since," said Bates head coach Peter Steenstra. "Her work ethic is second to none." Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.), who rows in the No. 7 seat for Bates, earns an impressive third spot on the All-America First Team, and she sports the best 2,000-meter erg time on the entire All-America team (7:01.1). Ritchie has been a large factor in elevating the Bobcats into one of the best women's rowing teams in Division III. This year she led Bates to 15 wins this year, and only one runner-up finish, to No. 1 Williams. Ritchie has propelled Bates to its first three trips to the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. Also a team captain for Bates women's rowing, Ritchie is a four-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree and a captain of the Bates Nordic skiing team. "Nicole is a tremendously driven athlete with genuine care and consideratino for her teammates," said Steenstra. "Her energy is contagious and her love of racing is the ideal attitude required for competition." Selection criteria for earning CRCA All-America honors include strength of schedule, regular season record, end of season regatta results, nomination rank, coaches' comments and 2,000-meter erg score. Bates competes at its third straight NCAA Women's Rowing Championships this weekend, May 29-30 at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, N.J. Villanova University will serve as host.
