New students are assigned faculty advisors who hold individual conferences with students during their first week on campus. To work with you as you select classes for your first semester at Bates, a member of the Bates faculty will be on hand Monday through Wednesday, July 20-21. Please call:

Also available through much of the summer will be Holly Gurney, associate dean of students at 207-786-6220 or Celine Dodge, administrative assistant at 207-786-6220. Carmita McCoy, associate dean for student transitions is available at 207-753-6963, except July 14-17.

After the first semester of the first year, the student and the academic advisor meet during registration periods and on an informal basis whenever the student seeks advice about the curriculum, course selection, the major program, the thesis, progress toward the degree, graduate school, or other academic concerns. While faculty members provide academic advice, final responsibility for course selection rests with the student. The Registrar provides the student and his or her advisor with an evaluation of the student's progress toward the degree at the end of the junior year. The deans of students are also available for advice on academic matters and student concerns.
