Professor Archibald's research and teaching interests include medical sociology, social movements, and organizations. He is currently exploring social networks among providers of substance abuse treatment services.

Recent articles and book chapters address disparities in the provision of substance abuse treatment services, firm performance in the treatment industry, legitimacy and political alliances in health social movements, and mobilization of HIV/AIDS constituents for clinical trials. His most recent book, The Evolution of Self-Help,  Macmillan (2007), examined the expansion and consolidation of self-help support groups across the United States between 1955 and 2000.
