WELCOME CLASS 2013!!!

NOMINATIONS FOR ELECTED STUDENT POSITIONS will take place today to Friday. Email mcoccjar@bates.edu if you’re interested in running. Offices include class co-presidents, class representatives, positions on the Dean’s, Faculty, President’s and Trustees’ advisory committees and Junior Class Marshals. Details of the positions will be sent by email. Please nominate yourself!

Students awarded PARKING PERMITS for 09/10 must pick them up at the Chase Hall Satellite Office (near housing) through Friday September 11 between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. only. Students must appear in person with Bates ID and vehicle registration. Vehicle must be registered to the student or parent only. Permits must be placed on the driver's side furthest window back only on the day of sale. Merrill permits are restricted to Merrill Lot only at all times. No exceptions. Seniors living off campus in a non college owned building are eligible for commuter permits valid until midnight with proof of residency. Students residing in a college owned overflow house are eligible for commuter permits. FAILURE TO PICK UP YOUR PERMIT WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF THE PERMIT AND PARKING PRIVILEGES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR WITH NO APPEAL. Altering, selling or giving your permit to another person is prohibited and will result in all parties being fined, towed and loss of parking privileges for the remainder of the Bates career along with disciplinary action in the form of student conduct. Anyone who operates or plans to operate a motor vehicle on campus is obligated to obtain and observe all motor vehicle policies. Use of a facility constitutes acceptance. Parking on campus is by permit only at all times including nights and weekends. A list of off campus alternative parking, not affiliated with the college is available at Security and on the web page.

CONVOCATION – 4:10 PM - Bates begins its 144th academic year. Speakers include three faculty members addressing aspects of a major planning process at Bates: Leslie Hill, associate professor of politics and special assistant to the president, Learning at Bates; Matthew Cote, associate professor of chemistry and associate dean of the faculty, Natural Sciences and Mathematics in the Liberal Arts; and Kirk Read, associate professor of French, The Arts in the College and the Community. At the Historic Quadrangle (rain site: Alumni Gym). Offices and organizations of the College, as well as athletic practices, are expected to suspend activities for the hour so that all students, faculty and staff members can be a part of this College-wide occasion, celebrating the beginning of the new academic year. Follow Convocation, an all-College picnic will be served on the Alumni Walk in front of Commons.

COLLEGE CHOIR Sings Carmina Burana Fall 2009 - College Choir is an 80 voice student choir committed to singing large scale Classical works with orchestra. This semester we will sing the Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Rehearsals are today and Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. If you are an athlete and would like to join there is a Monday evening College Choir rehearsal available. We rehearse in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. If you are interested in joining, please contact John Corrie, College Choir Director, for information regarding a user-friendly audition. Auditions will be held this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, September 9, 10 and 11. No one need prepare a piece or sight read. OFFICE OF MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS/MULTICULTURAL CENTER - Incoming Multicultural Reception - Thursday, September 10, 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm - Multicultural Center - Each year, the Office of Multicultural Affairs sponsors a reception and invites the campus to welcome entering multicultural, international, first generation and rural Maine students, and new faculty and staff members. Our annual reception is an opportunity for these new members of our campus to meet the larger Bates community and for us all to support the College’s diversity efforts.
