Today's events and programs

NOMINATIONS FOR ELECTED STUDENT POSITIONS will take place today. Email mcoccjar@bates.edu if you’re interested in running. Offices include class co-presidents, class representatives, positions on the Dean’s, Faculty, President’s and Trustees’ advisory committees and Junior Class Marshals. Details of the positions will be sent by email. Please nominate yourself!

Students awarded PARKING PERMITS for 09/10 must pick them up at the Chase Hall Satellite Office (near housing) today between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. only. Students must appear in person with Bates ID and vehicle registration. Vehicle must be registered to the student or parent only. Permits must be placed on the driver's side furthest window back only on the day of sale. Merrill permits are restricted to Merrill Lot only at all times. No exceptions. Seniors living off campus in a non college owned building are eligible for commuter permits valid until midnight with proof of residency. Students residing in a college owned overflow house are eligible for commuter permits. FAILURE TO PICK UP YOUR PERMIT WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF THE PERMIT AND PARKING PRIVILEGES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR WITH NO APPEAL. Altering, selling or giving your permit to another person is prohibited and will result in all parties being fined, towed and loss of parking privileges for the remainder of the Bates career along with disciplinary action in the form of student conduct. Anyone who operates or plans to operate a motor vehicle on campus is obligated to obtain and observe all motor vehicle policies. Use of a facility constitutes acceptance. Parking on campus is by permit only at all times including nights and weekends.  A list of off campus alternative parking, not affiliated with the college is available at Security and on the web page.

Interested in HOSTING A PROSPECTIVE BATES STUDENT this year?  Come sign up to be a day or overnight host. We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about Bates and would be willing to show people around campus.  It is a great way to get prospective students excited about Bates! - today from 11 am to 1 pm in New Commons Tabling Area.

Juniors and seniors interested in applying for a WATSON FELLOWSHIP to conduct an independent project abroad for the year following graduation should attend this meeting. Tonight at 6:30 pm in New Commons Little Room #226

AUDITIONS: THE BATES COLLEGE DEANSMEN, the oldest, all-male a capella group on campus, invites YOU to audition to join the ranks of its illustrious alumni. CAMPUS WORSHIP - an interdenominational, multi-ethnic Christian worship service!  Gospel music, dance, and celebration.  Our speaker this Sunday is Rev. Virginia Ward, director of Black Campus Ministries in New England.  5:30 PM in Chase Lounge in Chase Hall.  All are welcome.

First meeting for THE ATHLETES FOR HEALTHY CHOICES program held Sunday, Sept. 13 @ 7:30 pm in New Commons 221.  The meeting will last one hour and include information for the first two Fall programs:  The 6 Most Dangerous Weeks at College, and Midnight Madness.  Any athlete interested in becoming a part of this group - or wants to find out more about the program - are welcome to attend.

COLLEGE CHOIR Sings Carmina Burana Fall 2009 - College Choir is an 80 voice student choir committed to singing large scale Classical works with orchestra.  This semester we will sing the Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.  If you are an athlete and would like to join there is a Monday evening College Choir rehearsal available.  We rehearse in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall. If you are interested in joining, please contact John Corrie, College Choir Director, for information regarding a user-friendly audition.  Auditions will be held this afternoon.  No one need prepare a piece or sight read.  Email John Corrie at  jcorrie@bates.edu or call x 6409 for more information.  Please come to Office Room 239 to sign up for an audition.  Our first rehearsal is Monday September 14. 

THE ROBINSON PLAYERS   will be having their first meeting of the semester Monday, September 14 at 9 pm in Chase Lounge in Chase Hall. Come learn how you can join the student run theater club on campus and what AMAZING SHOWS we have planned for this year!

Friday, September 18th - CREOLE TABLE - Focus: Mexico - 4:30 pm, Multicultural Center - Guest Speaker: Dr. Marco Polo Hernández Cuevas, Associate Professor of Spanish, Department of Modern Foreign Languages, North Carolina Central University RSVP to ttaylor@bates.edu (seating is limited) by Monday, September 14th.  The Creole Table is a language/cultural program of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, which meets on selected Friday evenings. Each meeting combines dinner and discussion about a particular Creole society. Creole societies, which exist throughout the world, are defined by their multicultural, multi-racial/ethnic and polyglot populations as well as by similar histories of forced migrations (resulting from slavery or indenture), agricultural labor, plantation economies and the creation of new languages. "Creole" refers to, variously, language, race, cuisine, religion and culture.

Weekly organizational meetings

6:00 pm  COLLEGE SHUTTLE - The shuttle runs on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 pm - 12 am, and Sunday from 12 pm - 6 pm.  The shuttle runs to Auburn locations at the beginning of each hour, and runs to Lewiston locations on the half hour.

Students, student organizations, administrative or faculty offices who wish to submit a blurb to appear in the Bates Daily should fill out a request form in the Student Activities Office in Chase Hall by 4:00 p.m. the day before the date you want it to appear or 4:00 p.m. Friday for Saturday and Sunday editions. Blurbs for one event may only run in three editions. The CSA Office reserves complete editorial control over all submissions to the Bates Daily.
