SCIENCE LECTURE: The Bates College Chemistry Department cordially invites you to attend the George S. Hammond ’43, H’73 Eminent Scientist Lecture on Where in the World Will Energy Come From By Dr. Nathan Lewis, George L. Argyros Professor of Chemistry, California Institute of Technology. Dr. Lewis is an internationally known alternative energy expert and chemistry professor whose research team is using nanotechnology to develop more efficient solar cells. 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 16, Olin Arts Center Concert Hall - Admission is free, but tickets are required. The George S. Hammond '43 H'73 Eminent Scientist Lecture fund was established in honor of the internationally recognized scientist George S. Hammond by his students and associates from Iowa State College to support lectures by important and eminent scientists.

THE 2009 FALL WORKSHOP SERIES – Wednesday, September 16, 4:30-5:30PM - The OCS offers hour-long interactive workshops on various career topics throughout the semester. POETRY READING: Jack Collom (b. Chicago, 1931) grew up in Illinois and Colorado small towns, walking the woods, loving nature, then studied Forestry at Colorado A&M.  After four years in the U.S. Air Force as a clerk-typist, he worked in factories for twenty years while becoming a poet.  For the past thirty years, Collom has worked as a freelance poetry teacher, and also taught in the writing program at Naropa University in Boulder, CO.  Collom has published twenty-three books and chapbooks of poetry, the latest being Situations, Sings (with Lyn Hejinian, published by Adventures in Poetry, 2008) and Exchanges of Earth & Sky (Fishdrum, 2006).  His selected poems, Red Car Goes By, was published by Tuumba Press in 2001. Collom also has authored three books on and of writings by children, including Poetry Everywhere (Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 1994). Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 pm in Muskie Room

THE FINANCE BOOTCAMP is a conference-style event that includes general finance and consulting overviews, break-out sessions, and relationship building.  The event is open to all majors – first years through seniors.  Alumni returned to campus to engage students in relationship building and networking and to offer their expertise in the finance and consulting industry.
