THE MULTIFAITH CHAPLAINCY - Mindfulness Meditation - Wednesdays 12:10-12:40 – Chapel -  Chaplaincy Mindfulness is the awareness that emerges  through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment,  and non-judgmentally to things as they are.  Each session will open with a brief poem or reading followed by a guided meditation practice  such as loving-kindness meditation, basic mindfulness, mindful eating, the body scan, walking meditation, and more.

BLOOD DRIVE: 2 seconds is how often someone in America needs blood. 3 is how many lives 1 blood donation can help save. 97% is the chance you know someone who will need a blood transfusion. Make blood donation a regular part of your life. ***BLOOD DRIVE*** Tuesday, September 22. sign up WED-FRI lunch and dinner outside of commons.  To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be HEALTHY, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with parental consent. You must weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated whole blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or double red cells in the last 16 weeks (112 days). Students YOUNGER than 19 years old must also meet height and weight requirements. If you have STUDIED ABROAD, please ask if you are eligible to donate. LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE: First year students-learn to use the library like a senior-self guided tours and a chance to enter the drawing for $100 gift certificate to the Bookstore-twenty prizes in all. Today between 2 pm & 5:30 pm.

SCIENCE LECTURE: The Bates College Chemistry Department cordially invites you to attend the George S. Hammond ’43, H’73 Eminent Scientist Lecture on Where in the World Will Energy Come From  By Dr. Nathan Lewis, George L. Argyros Professor of Chemistry, California Institute of Technology. Dr. Lewis is an internationally known alternative energy expert and chemistry professor whose research team is using nanotechnology to develop more efficient solar cells. 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 16, Olin Arts Center Concert Hall - Admission is free, but tickets are required. The George S. Hammond '43 H'73 Eminent Scientist Lecture fund was established in honor of the internationally recognized scientist George S. Hammond by his students and associates from Iowa State College to support lectures by important and eminent scientists.

THE 2009 FALL WORKSHOP SERIES –4:30-5:30PM - The OCS offers hour-long interactive workshops on various career topics throughout the semester. Come learn about THE BATES EQUESTRIAN TEAM at 6:30 in Carnegie 113 during our first informational team meeting of the year! We will be explaining what we are all about as a team, including showing, lessons and community involvement. Come have your horsey questions answered, and get some free pizza and drinks while you are at it!

The first BATES MUSICIANS’ UNION (BMU) meeting will be today at 7pm in the BMU practice space. The practice space is located on the 1st floor of Chase Hall (look for the ramp next to the main stairwell). The BMU is a club for musicians to meet other musicians, also providing a practice space and equipment for student bands. This meeting is important because we will hold elections for BMU officers and we’ll have a jam session so that people can start meeting and playing with other musicians. Bring your axes, amps, and any other equipment you want to store. We’ll also work on getting keys for everyone. We hope to see y’all there!

POETRY READING: Jack Collom (b. Chicago, 1931) grew up in Illinois and Colorado small towns, walking the woods, loving nature, then studied Forestry at Colorado A&M.  After four years in the U.S. Air Force as a clerk-typist, he worked in factories for twenty years while becoming a poet.  For the past thirty years, Collom has worked as a freelance poetry teacher, and also taught in the writing program at Naropa University in Boulder, CO.  Collom has published twenty-three books and chapbooks of poetry, the latest being Situations, Sings (with Lyn Hejinian, published by Adventures in Poetry, 2008) and Exchanges of Earth & Sky (Fishdrum, 2006).  His selected poems, Red Car Goes By, was published by Tuumba Press in 2001. Collom also has authored three books on and of writings by children, including Poetry Everywhere (Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 1994). Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 pm in Muskie Room
