Brecher, Dilts pace men's XC against Bowdoin

Bates senior captain Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.), took first place, finishing the 5-mile course in a time of 26:21, just a second ahead of fellow captain Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.). Colman Hatton led the Polar Bears, finishing third in 26:37. Bates' Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) and Bowdoin's Stan Berkow rounded out the top five finishers. Bowdoin, ranked fifth in New England, claimed six of the next seven spots, with Thompson Ogilvie, Colin Ogilvie, Scott Longwell and Anthony Colabella, Matthew Hillard and Charlie Berdahl going sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively. Bates sophomore Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.) was ninth in 27:20. Bates occupied spots 13 through 16: first-year Ryan Rice (Franklin, Mass.), junior Peter Gurney (Arlington, Va.), junior Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) and first-year Eric Kimball (Manchester, Mass.). Bates next competes at the Codfish Bowl, next Saturday at Boston's Franklin Park at 12 p.m. |
