McEnroe makes 17 saves in field hockey loss

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Despite a career-high 17 saves from Bates goalie Katie McEnroe, No. 7-ranked Bowdoin put on a dominating performance in defeating the visiting Bates field hockey team 5-0 on Saturday.

Bowdoin sophomore Ella Curren collected her first career hat trick, sparking a four-goal second-half outburst. The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 (1-1 NESCAC), while the Bobcats fall to 0-3 (0-2 NESCAC) with the loss.

Bowdoin carried a one-goal advantage into halftime thanks to a Shavonne Lord put-back in the 18th minute. Despite an 18-0 shot advantage in the opening period, Bates junior netminder McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) stood tall with eight saves to keep the Bobcats in contention.

The Polar Bears broke through with an outburst early in the second half. Emily French's entry pass from the wing found Curren, who slammed it into the lower right corner to make it 2-0. Elizabeth Clegg tipped home an Ingrid Oelschlager shot to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute before Curren added a pair of late goals on penalty corners opportunities from McKenna Teague.

Emily Neilson was not forced to make a save in the shutout win for Bowdoin while McEnroe swept aside 17 for the Bobcats.
