Golf: Men 10th at NESCAC Qualifier; Women win UMF invite

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. and WILTON, Maine -- The Bates College golf team finished 10th on Sunday in the NESCAC Men's Golf Qualifier at Waubeeka Golf Links, despite some exceptional play on Day 1. Also on Sunday, the Bates women's golf squad won the UMF Women's Invitational at Wilson Lake Country Club in Wilton, Maine.

At the NESCAC Men's Qualifier, Bates stood in sixth place after the first round of the tournament concluded earlier on Sunday, after weather delays plagued Day 1 of the event.

Senior captain Kurt Schuler (Windham, N.H.) fired a first-round 73 at the Taconic Country Club, tying for fourth place. Schuler's second-round score of 79 put him in 15th place overall out of 49 competitors.

Junior Mike Kelen (Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) were both tied for 27th place with two-day scores of 157, and sophomore Lee Smith (Lexington, Mass.) was 45th with a 170. Smith, who earned NESCAC All-Conference honors last year by tying for fifth at the event, was seeing his first action of the season due to illness.

Meanwhile at the UMF Women's Invitational, Bates sophomore Brigid Dunn (Milford, Ohio) fired an 85 to claim medalist honors as the Bobcats rolled to a 381-433 victory over Bowdoin. Neither the host Beavers nor Colby had a team score.) Senior Whitney Roller (Haverford, Pa.) was only a stroke back at 86, and sophomore Tessa Pals (Wilmette, Ill.) shot a 98 for a sweep of the top three scores. Sophomore Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) shot a 106 to take seventh place individually.
