ECON LECTURE: Ju-Chin Huang, Professor of Economics at The University of New Hampshire will speak on "Cross-Commodity Risk Effects: A Study of Individual Demand for Seafood, Meat and Poultry" - Thursday October 15, 4:15 pm - Pettengill Hall G-65. Refreshments will be served. In this paper, the demand for goods with potential health risks is studied.  Cross-commodity risk effects are demonstrated through a theoretical adding-up condition and an empirical study. Micro data on individual monthly consumption of seafood, meat, and poultry, both at home and in restaurants, are analyzed. It is found that both own- and  cross-commodity health risk effects exist in individual consumption of seafood, meat, and poultry. The empirical results suggest that seafood and poultry tend to be risk substitutes, and meat and poultry tend to be risk complements. This study provides the first empirical evidence of cross-commodity health risk effects on individual consumption of seafood, meat, and poultry. Sponsored by the Economics Department and the Casey Fund
