No. 10 Middlebury pulls away from field hockey team
October 24,
2009
Middlebury (10-3 overall, 5-3 NESCAC) outshot Bates (1-10, 0-8) by a 41-17 margin in the game, including a 27-3 edge in the first half. Bates evened things up in shots in the second half, but the Panthers extended their lead anyway from 2-0 at intermission. Bates senior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 59th minute to close the gap to 6-1. It was the final home game for Bates seniors Heidi Judkins (Farmington, Maine), Maciewicz, Sammy Rothkopf (Chicago, Ill.) and Helena Turner (Manchester, Mass.). Delano put the Panthers on the board in the ninth minute when she redirected an outside shot by Heather McCormack past Turner, Bates' starting goaltender, on a penalty corner play. The two first-half scores were all Middlebury would need for the win, but they added five in the second half nonetheless. Delano scored two straight in the opening minutes of the half, the first on an assist by Lauren Greer on a penalty corner. Greeg added an unassisted score of her own to make it 5-0 in the 43rd minute, and Delano added her third penalty-corner goal in the 45th minute on an assist by Mullery Doar. Turner made 13 saves and allowed five goals in 45 minutes in net for Bates. Junior Katie McEnroe came on for the final 25 minutes, making five more saves and allowing a goal. Becca Shaw made two saves in goal for Middlebury. Bates' next scheduled game is on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Husson. Middlebury wraps up regular-season play with a home game against Williams on Friday at 3:30 p.m. |
