The PEER WRITING CENTER IN Ladd has new daytime hours. We're open Monday through Thursday from 11 to 5 and Friday from 11 to 3. Stop by for some constructive conversation about your writing - no appointment necessary. The Center is also open Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 to 11 and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5.  See you there!

Bates College hosts its annual GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL FAIR from 11AM to 1:30PM in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building, Central Avenue. This event is open to  Bates faculty, staff and students as well as the general public.  There is no admission charge and no prior registration is required. 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM Olin Arts Center Concert Hall - NOONDAY CONCERT. Performing: Musica Nuova. Ancient Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead dissolved on All Hallow's Eve. Come hear weird, wonderful, and spooky music from Purcell's England and stay for tricks and treats and tall tales! Special guest storyteller Doria Hughes.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM New Commons, Room 221 - LECTURE: Democracy and Political Culture in Sri Lanka given by Yodage Ranjith Amarasinghe, Professor of Political Science at University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. Description: Political culture, understood as patterns of orientations to political objects among members of  a nation, influences shaping the political system of a given society. The third world democracy of Sri Lanka, once hailed as a model worthy of being emulated, stands challenged very seriously today. There is no doubt that the two insurrections in the south and separatism in the north have contributed to this situation significantly. In this talk, Professor Amarasinghe will look at the impact of political culture in the whole process of building of democratic institutions and their practice.

REBUILDING POST-CONFLICT SOCIETIES - Berthe Kayitesi, author and survivor of the genocide of the Tutsis, will speak on Wednesday, October 28th at 7:30pm in the Muskie Archives about her life and the rebuilding of communities and families in post-conflict Rwanda, as part of the Harward Center's Civic Forum Series. Ms. Kayitesi's topic is "Tomorrow My Life: Orphans in Post-Genocide Rwanda." Please join us for her compelling talk, which is free and open to the public.

ART LECTURE: Barry Nemett, chair of the Painting Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art, will speak about his work in conjunction with his exhibition Barry Nemett: Drawings from Italy in the Museum of Art. Nemett has received numerous awards, including two from the Alfred and Trafford Klots Residency Program to paint in Brittany, France, and a Ford Foundation grant to support his work in Italy.In addition to visual works, Nemett has penned a novel, a textbook, as well as his most recent collection of writings and art: Paintings, Poems, and Passages, which will be available for signing in the Museum of Art immediately following the lecture. Nemett's lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Visual Culture and the Mellon Learning Associate Program. Thursday, October 29 at 6:30 pm in Olin 104
