THE MULTIFAITH CHAPLAINCY - Mindfulness Meditation - Wednesdays 12:10-12:40 – Chapel -  Chaplaincy Mindfulness is the awareness that emerges  through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment,  and non-judgmentally to things as they are.  Each session will open with a brief poem or reading followed by a guided meditation practice  such as loving-kindness meditation, basic mindfulness, mindful eating, the body scan, walking meditation, and more.

The PEER WRITING CENTER in Ladd has new daytime hours. We're open Monday through Thursday from 11 to 5 and Friday from 11 to 3. Stop by for some constructive conversation about your writing - no appointment necessary. The Center is also open Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 to 11 and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5.  See you there!

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM New Commons, Room 221 - LECTURE: Democracy and Political Culture in Sri Lanka given by Yodage Ranjith Amarasinghe, Professor of Political Science at University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. Description: Political culture, understood as patterns of orientations to political objects among members of  a nation, influences shaping the political system of a given society. The third world democracy of Sri Lanka, once hailed as a model worthy of being emulated, stands challenged very seriously today. There is no doubt that the two insurrections in the south and separatism in the north have contributed to this situation significantly. In this talk, Professor Amarasinghe will look at the impact of political culture in the whole process of building of democratic institutions and their practice.

Thursday, October 29, 2009 - 12:10 PM until 1:00 PM New Commons 221- ENVIROLUNCH SERIES: A Bates community gathering around environmental topics. Yukon Bound: The Passage and Presence of Humans in a Last Great Wilderness William Loopesko and Russell Milholland will talk about their experience as Otis Fellows. The purpose of the Otis Fellowship program is to encourage Bates students to explore and reflect upon new adventures and innovative ways to understand, appreciate, and express our interdependencies with the earth in the tradition of Phil Otis ('95). Thursday, October 29, 2009 - 7:00 PM Olin Arts Center, Room 104 - LECTURE AND BOOK SIGNING: Barry Nemett, will speak about his work in conjunction with his exhibition Barry Nemett: Drawings from Italy in the Museum of Art. In addition to visual works, Nemett has penned a novel, a textbook, as well as his most recent collection of  writings and art: Paintings, Poems, and Passages, which will be available for signing in the Museum of Art immediately following the lecture.
