ART COMMONS is back! Are you interested in a place to create ART on CAMPUS? Did you participate in last year’s ART-IN and want more? Are you looking to use empty space in Chase Hall for student art? Come to Art Commons for the Art Commons Informational Meeting at 4:30 p.m. Learn about becoming an Art Commons Monitor and using this space for your creative needs. We will meet in the lobby on the first floor of Chase and then go to the space together. Contact Nora Brouder, nbrouder@bates.edu, if you can’t make the meeting.

FAGBUG! Erin Davies of Albany, N.Y. was the victim of a hate crime on April 18, 2007, the national Day of Silence. Her 2002 VW Beetle was vandalized with red spray paint with the words "fAg" and "U R gAy" written on the hood and driver's door. Davies believes the crime was a response to a rainbow sticker she had on her car. Rather than stay embarrassed, Davies has decided to travel around the country in her bug as a visual testament to the homophobia that continues to exist. She is also interviewing everyone she can during her trip to record their reactions and engage in the dialogue her car has started around the country. Erin has made a documentary about her travels, which will be shown @ 4:30 in the Mays Center. The Fagbug itself will also be on campus during most of the day- look for it on Alumni Walk!

7:00 PM  - 8:00 PM Hathorn 104 - TALK: An Introduction to Dynamical Systems, Julia Sets and the Mandelbrot Set by Chip Ross. Abstract: "When my kids were little, they liked me to design "treasure hunt" route games on their birthdays.  In the game, they follow a series of clues placed at different locations around the house; each clue told them where to go to find the next one, and a treasure would be found at the final spot. So I thought, maybe I could write a computer program to create these routes for me. I'd use a formula.  Given starting coordinates, the formula would produce a new set of coordinates, which when put back into the same formula, would produce an even newer set of coordinates, and thus a whole sequence of hiding places for clues would automatically arise. However, the simple formula produced very complicated, chaotic routes that lead to fractals, geometric objects whose boundaries are so contorted they contain little copies of themselves, and the copies have littler copies and...well, come and see!" Sponsored by The Math Council.
