Tonight 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Hathorn 104 - TALK: An Introduction to Dynamical Systems, Julia Sets and the Mandelbrot Set by Chip Ross. Abstract: "When my kids were little, they liked me to design "treasure hunt" route games on their birthdays. In the game, they follow a series of clues placed at different locations around the house; each clue told them where to go to find the next one, and a treasure would be found at the final spot. So I thought, maybe I could write a computer program to create these routes for me. I'd use a formula. Given starting coordinates, the formula would produce a new set of coordinates, which when put back into the same formula, would produce an even newer set of coordinates, and thus a whole sequence of hiding places for clues would automatically arise. However, the simple formula produced very complicated, chaotic routes that lead to fractals, geometric objects whose boundaries are so contorted they contain little copies of themselves, and the copies have littler copies and...well, come and see!" Sponsored by The Math Council.

Friday, November 6, 2009 -8:00 PM Olin Arts Center, Room 105 - FILM: GLOBAL LENS: SONG FROM THE SOUTHERN SEAS. Two couples, one Russian and one Kazakh, live side by side in relative harmony in a beautiful yet semi-desolate region of the Great Steppe. But when the fair skinned Russians give birth to a boy of decidedly darker skin, fifteen years of suspicion and acrimony arises between them, and can only be resolved by an ironic twist of family and fate. At times darkly somber, at other times tender and wistful and buoyed throughout by a soundtrack of folk inspired melodies writer-director Marat Sarulu draws on Kazakhstan's epic history to create a gritty and deeply compassionate tale of humor and cultural insight. $5 general admission, free for Bates students. http://www.bates.edu/x205194.xml
