Bates College Museum of Art Receives Award

Lewiston, Maine -- Through the demonstration of outstanding performance in all areas of museum operations, the Bates College Museum of Art has again been awarded the highly competitive General Operating Support award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington D.C.

During the fiscal year of 1997 IMLS received 1,061 applications for this award from around the country from institutions requesting over a total of $84 million. Only 202 awards were made to 19% of those that applied. The recipients represent the full range of museum disciplines, from art to zoos.

"All the funds [from this award] will be used for educational programs in service of the community," said Genetta McLean, the museum director and curator. This award is a "stamp of achievement that sparks vital public private partnerships," IMLS director Diane Frankel commented.

The selection process is a highly competitive one and museums are rated by a panel of peers. For instance, Bates was assessed by curators and directors from other small college museums. The categories through which judging takes place include facilities, audience, collections, maintenance and care of collections and stewardship. Previous winners are also judged on how they spent previous grant money.

The present exhibit at Bates College Museum of Art is Alex GreyÕs "Numinous Flesh," which can be viewed during regular museum hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
