The Bates campus is responding to the tragedy of the loss of one of its students, Morgan McDuffee '02.
We are grieving. We extend to Morgan's family and friends the consolation of our honor, respect, and affection. The tragedy includes the fatal stabbing of Morgan as he attempted to break up an altercation of which he was not a part. The altercation involved several Bates students and several non-Bates young adults. Our grief and loss do not mask our commitment to maintaining the safety of our students and continuing our commitment to the positive collaborations of the College, fostered by its students, with the Lewiston/Auburn community. We shall use this opportunity to reaffirm what we do and offer in providing a secure environment an assessment we make continuously and one that is documented in the College being valued for being safe. The Bates community is close and it is united. We will work to strengthen those bonds and the security brought by that unity. We are also a campus aware of our positive and constructive membership in the greater Lewiston/Auburn community. We are proud of this community and deeply appreciate the expressions of consolation and support from neighbors and area citizens, City officials, the Police Department, the local schools, and many, many others. We shall continue to work together for the mutual good of our College and the good of the citizens of the community. Donald W.
