McDuffee: Moment of Silence
March 7, 2002

March 7 was a gray, raw day in Lewiston. A little before noon there were somewhat fewer people on campus than usual, thanks to the big motorcoaches that had pulled up in front of Chase Hall around 8 a.m. to take mourners to Peterborough, N.H., and the funeral of Morgan McDuffee. At 11:45 there were three or four people in the Chapel; by noon, when the Hathorn bell tolled to mark a moment of silence for Morgan, that number had quadrupled, mostly young women, a few young men. They sat with heads bowed or staring straight ahead for that aching moment. Out on the Quad it was like a movie freeze frame: the bell sounded, we stopped and thought what needed thinking, the bell sounded again and — only grudgingly — we resumed living in this gray raw day.
