1:00-2:30 pm - Session I: The Natural Place
The natural world anchors all our learning and knowing. Presentations by faculty members Carl Straub and Sharon Kinsman, poet and former biology professor Robert Chute, and Barbara St. John Vickery '83 of the Nature Conservancy
3:00-4:30 pm - Session II: The Intellectual Place
What are the intellectual underpinnings of Bates? Presentations by faculty members Marcus Bruce ’77 and Rebecca Corrie and Dean of Students Celeste Branham. Hymns and Bates songs performed by the Inaugural Choir, a group of faculty, students and staff.
8:00-9:30 pm - Session III: Dislocations and Discoveries
Why is arriving at Bates and Lewiston rife with opportunity, growth, tension, and endless discovery? Presentations by faculty, students and alumni, and dance performances by nearly 40 students.

THE INAUGURATION OF ELAINE TUTTLE HANSEN

118 delegates from other colleges and universities will join the Bates faculty and trustees in a march accompanied by the Bates College Javanese Gamelan ensemble. A new work for choir and orchestra, composed for President Hansen by William Matthews, the Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music, will be debuted. Formal greetings will be made by students, faculty, staff and alumni representatives. Community greetings will be offered by City Councilor Lillian LaFontaine O'Brien for the city of Lewiston, Mayor Lee Young for the city of Auburn, and Cornell University President Hunter Rawlings for the academic community. President Hansen will be presented with the symbols of her office, and will deliver the inaugural address, "The Place of Possibility." The ceremony will conclude with music from the Steel Pan Rhythm Riders.
