The Service-Learning Program has a number of grant opportunities to support student service-learning and volunteer activities. The grants range from small ones ($300) that provide materials, transportation, etc. for academic year or summer projects to larger grants that support student engagement in service-learning activities in the summer.

Academic Year Grant Opportunities

CRAFTS SERVICE AWARDS provide funds for students who design an academically-related service-learning project.  Funding up to $500 for qualified students and up to $1000 for a group of students is available.  Arthur Crafts funds are intended to cover the expenses that might arise in a project, such as supplies, fees, or research expenses.  Awards are competitive, are granted without regard to financial need and are available to students in all disciplines and classes.  For more information, contact the Harward Center for Community Partnerships or download an application in PDF format by clicking on the hyperlink above.

PAPAIOANOU SERVICE-LEARNING GRANTS are awarded on a competitive basis to students who seek up to $100 to carry out an academically-related service-learning project in the community during the academic year.  Students may submit a proposal at any point during the semester to the Harward Center for Community Partnerships.  Students who are thinking of applying for these funds are strongly encouraged to talk with Holly Lasagna at the Center.  An application in PDF format can be downloaded by clicking on the hyperlink above.

COMMUNITY WORK-STUDY FELLOWSHIPS provide federal work-study funds for academic year community-based work with local non-profit agencies.  Students can apply for jobs already listed for local organizations.  Students MUST qualify for federal work-study funds.  Compensation is at a rate of $8/hour.  Host agencies must agree to reimburse Bates College for 25% of the student's total earnings.  For more information, contact the Harward Center for Community Partnerships or download an application in PDF format by clicking on the hyperlink above.

Summer Grant Opportunities

HARWARD SUMMER STUDENT FELLOWSHIPS, which are funded through the Vincent Mulford Fund, the Class of 2000 Fund, and the Harward Center, provide support for academically-related service-learning projects.  Students interested in applying for this fellowship are encouraged to meet with the Harward Center staff to discuss the application process.  Working with a supervisor at a service agency site, the student designs an eight- to ten-week project, outlines job responsibilities, and identifies some of the social issues that the work will address.  Grant applications must include a written endorsement from both the host agency and a faculty member.  Students are encouraged to develop projects that address wide-ranging social issues while having a local impact.  Funding of up to $3700 is awarded for the eight to ten weeks of full-time work.  These grants are highly competitive.  For more information, contact the Harward Center for Community Partnerships or download an application in PDF format by clicking on the hyperlink above.
