Bates falls once again to USM, 69-66

2002 LEWISTON, Maine - The University of Southern Maine extended its winning streak to six with a 69-66 win over Bates College in a non-conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium. The last time Bates defeated USM was in 1997. Tiffany Jones (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan HS) scored 20 points coming off the bench to lead Southern Maine (3-0). Kara Crockett (Glenburn, Maine/Bangor HS) and Meg Cressler (Appleton, Maine/Camden-Rockport HS) added 13 points apiece for the Huskies. Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine/Gorham HS) scored a game-high 26 points to lead Bates (3-1). Olivia Zurek (Arlington, Mass./Arlington HS) notched her third double-double of the season scoring 18 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Southern Maine trailed by as many a 16 points (58-42) with 11:14 remaining, but went on a 25-8 run over the next 11:15 to take a one point lead on Jones’ jumper with :59 left. Bates College will travel to Salem State College for a game Monday, December 2. |
