Men's lacrosse drops NESCAC opener, 4-2

LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates College men’s lacrosse team lost its New England Small College Athletic Conference opener Sunday afternoon to Williams College, 4-2, in front of a hearty crowd that braved the wind and cold at the AstroTurf Field.

Scott Wilbur (Victor, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead Williams (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) including the game winner with just six seconds remaining in the first half. The Ephs netted three goals in the second period. Ward Bitter (Manhasset, NY.) scored the initial goal for Williams with 11:44 left in the period.

Bates (1-2, 0-1) opened the scoring when Brad Frost (Winchester, Mass.) found the net just 2:12 into the contest. Ben Clements (Ligonier, Pa.) notched his first goal of the season, which cut the lead to one goal with 29 second left in the third period.

Peter Thomson (Greenwich, Conn.) added an insurance goal just 11 seconds after Clements’ goal.

Matt Rade (Orchard Park, N.Y.) saved eight shots for Williams while his counterpart Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) saved 17 shots for Bates.
