Professor Kane's research and teaching interests encompass inequalities of race, class, gender and sexuality; gender and family; sociology of childhood; research methods; public opinion; and social psychology.

Some of her recent publications focus on parental responses to children's gender nonconformity (forthcoming 2006), public opinion toward feminism (2004), the role of education in encouraging criticism of racial and gender inequality (2001), and racial variations in gender related attitudes in the US (2000).

Her current research projects include a qualitative exploration of how parents of young children think about gender, and a quantitative analysis of the predictors of support for gender-related affirmative action.
