Winter Semester 2008: Class descriptions are provided to assist students in deciding what class is best for them. Use links on the left to find day, time, location and instructor for classes. 90's Aerobics: Get a great workout while enjoying yourself with this fun workout set to 90's music. We will combine light weight training with an upbeat cardio workout. Fun and easy dance routines will be learned at each class. The last fifteen minutes of class will be a cool down follwed by core and glute work. CLASS FULL. Alpine Ski: learn to downhill ski; students must provide equipment and transportation to Lost Valley. Equipment may be checked out through the Outing Club Equipment Room or may be rented at a discounted rate for Bates Students at Lost Valley. Actual ski time will be 1.5-2 hours each week. Class time is dependent upon instructor. http://www.lostvalleyski.com/ Athletic Skills Development Lab: this class is designed for the athlete who wants to improve all athletic skills for their sport: agility, endurance, power, speed, reaction time, etc. Various methods will be used to improve skills including plyometrics, speed training, and ladder work. Badminton/Pickleball: Pickleball is similar to tennis and played with a wooden paddle and a wiffle ball. Equipment provided for both badminton and pickleball. Gray Cage. CLASS FULL. Ballet Barre: this class is designed for the student who wishes to learn ballet, or has had very limited exposure to ballet. Dance Studio 1, Merrill Gym. Bollywood Dance: is the informal term popularly used for Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the Indian film industry. Bollywood dance is termed for the type of dance and singing used in many Indian films and musicals. It includes various dance types such as Bhangra, classical, folk and jazz. Check out this style of dance at UTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jUBEBbhowE. Bowling: 10 pin bowling (big ball) at Spart Time Recreation in Lewiston. Students must provide their own transportation. Broomball: always wanted to play ice hockey but don't have skates? Now you can! Broomball is ice hockey played without skates -- wearing sneakers. Equipment is provided: broom, puck and helmets. Come learn the fastest-growing IM sport! CANCELED! Coffee Substitute: a great morning wake-up exercise class, using Dance Studio 1, The BAR (cardio room) and Tarbell Pool. Dodgeball/Wiffleball: remember these fun games from middle school? Fast and fun exercise played indoors. Wear athletic clothes and bring sneakers to class. All equipment is provided. Gray Cage. CANCELED! Goju-Ryu Karate: is a relatively new martial art drawing from many traditions and martial skills from the japanese. It teaches the student control over power, to be flexible and adapt to new situations. Students should come dressed fro physical activity. Gymcraftics: Gymcraftics is similar to the dance company Pilobolus in that people work together to create shapes and structures with their bodies (as seen on the 2007 Oscars). The experience is definitely collaborative and creative. Anyone can do it and you don't have to have any dance background. For more information on gymcraftics go to the website www.airtimeathletics.com. PE Room, Merrill Gym. Hip Hop: the intermediate class will build upon the fundamental skills but beginners are welcome! Funky and fun dance to music. Guest Instructor. Dance Studio, Merrill Gym. Ice Skating: this class will teach you how to skate on ice using hockey skates or figure skates. Students must provide their own skates. Check the Outing Club Equipment Room for skates or purchase used skates at Play It Again Sports, in Auburn. Kickboxing: this class features aerobic conditioning using martial arts movements. PE room, Merrill Gym. Learn to Swim: this class is designed for the student who wants to learn to swim. Individual attention will be given to each student. Tarbell Pool, Merrill Gym. Nordic Ski: learn to cross country ski on various terrains. Students must provide their own equipment and transportation to off campus sites. Equipment may be checked out from the Outing Club Equipment room. Class time is dependent upon instructor. Students should expect to spend approximately 2.5 hours for the class, which includes transportation to and from skiing sites. Realms of Fitness: This class is an exploration into several realms of fitness ranging from cardiovascular fitness to muscle strength. Beginning with a pre-fitness testing class where different levels of their personal fitness will be measured, students will then set goals for themselves. Classroom discussions will preceed lab workouts! Students have the opportunity to earn 4 credits by adding an additional workout day each week. Location: Davis Fitness Center. Snowboarding: learn to snowboard at Maine's best snowboard park: Lost Valley. 2 classes are being offered! Students must provide their own equipment and transportation to class. Equipment may be checked out at the Outing Club's Equipment room or can be rented for a discounted fee (for Bates students) at Lost Valley. http://www.lostvalleyski.com/ Snow Shoe: learn to snow shoe on all types of terrains. Students must provide their own equipment and should check the Outing Club Equipment room. Students will need to provide their own transportation to various sites. BRING snowshoes to 1st class! Meeting location: Merrill Gym front lobby. CANCELED! Strength Training: Two separate classes are offered: the co-ed class and the class for women. Students will be taught proper techniques for all equipment in the Davis Fitness Center. Specialized programs will be designed for each participant. Davis Fitness Center, Underhill Arena. Telemark Ski: learn the graceful skiing techniques of downhill skiing on cross country skis. Equipment will be provided by the Outing Club. Students must provide own transportation to Lost Valley for classes. http://www.lostvalleyski.com/ Yoga: NEW day for class - now held on Mondays! 2 separate classes.are offered featuring relaxation and meditative exercises. Students must wear comfortable clothes and bring a towel; yoga mats will be provided. Noon class will be taught in Dance Studio 1 in Merrill Gym; 2 pm class will be held in the PE Room, Merrill Gym - just down the hall from the Dance Studios.
