Definition of Club SportsAn intercollegiate club sport is one that has met the criteria and has been officially recognized by the Athletics Department. Sports clubs that are not sponsored as a varsity team may apply to the Athletics Department for official recognition. Students are afforded a valuable learning experience through the organization and administration of the club sport activity, including budgeting, scheduling, coaching, and leadership as club officers and captains. Officers work closely with the Director of Club Sports from the Athletics Department to ensure compliance with College and sport association policies. Physical Education requirements. The season must consist of a minimum of three intercollegiate competitions during a minimum six week period, of which the team conducts at least five hours of practice per week. Additional standards are provided for each club who chooses to earn physical education credits for their season of participation. Accurate records are kept by the club sport officers and turned in annually for students to receive physical education credits for their participation. Participation requirements. Only Bates students with full-time status may participate on the club sports teams. The sports clubs practice and compete only during their season, allowing students the opportunity to participate in other activities on campus. Physical requirements. NEW! Students who intend to participate on the rugby or ice hockey teams will need to have a physical completed by their doctor on file with the Health Center by August 1, 2007. The physical may be downloaded at: http://www.bates.edu/images/Physicalexam.pdf Students participating on all other intercollegiate club teams will need to have their initial physical (submitted to the Health Center prior to your 1st year on campus) updated with any changes, such as injuries or physical conditions.
