Fall Semester 2009Physical Education Activity Classes 5k Running: Ever thought about running or competing in a road race? Here's your chance to learn how to prepare for a 5k race (3.1 miles), race strategies, training and nutrition tips. And the finale: compete in a road race! Tues/Thurs 2:40-3:40 pm at Merrill Track. Aerobics: a total body workout set to popular music, includes 45 minutes of cardio, incorporating some light weights and strength training followed by 15 minutes of ab work and cool down. Mon/Wed 4:30-5:30 pm, PE Room, Merrill Gym. Badminton/Pickleball: Pickleball is similar to tennis and played with a wooden paddle and a wiffle ball. Equipment provided for both badminton and pickleball. Wed 11 am - 12:30 pm, Gray Cage. Baile Latino: Latino Aerobic Dance: a cardio exercise workout to Latin music. Tue/Thur 5:45-6:45 pm, PE Room, Merrill Gym. Balkan Dance: experience the cultures of Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia through their traditional dances. Many of the dances are group dances, adding a lot of energy to the performance. The dances are suited for both men and women. New Offering! Thursdays 7:30-9 pm in Dance Studio 2, Merrill Gym. Ballet Basics - Barre Basics: A basic Ballet barre that emphasizes correct anatomical placement and classical ballet vocabulary. This class is appropriate for beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of ballet and for advanced dancers who want to concentrated on maintaining technique. Mon/Wed 12 - 1 pm Dance Studio 1, Merrill Gym. Basketball: improve your basketball skills, learn strategies for various games (1v1, 3v3, 5v5) and get a great workout playing a fun game! Tue/Thurs 1:10-2 pm, Alumni Gym. Bollywood Dance: is the informal term popularly used for Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the Indian film industry. Bollywood dance is termed for the type of dance and singing used in many Indian films and musicals. It includes various dance types such as Bhangra, classical, folk and jazz. Golf- Beginning: this class is designed for beginners or students who have had very little experience with golf. Proper techniques will be taught, along with rules and etiquette of the game. Equipment and transportation are provided. Class Fee: $60. Tuesdays 1-2:30 pm, meet at Merrill Gym. Indoor Climbing: 2 separate classes are offered in which students will learn the techniques and skills for climbing indoor walls on the newly rennovated wall located in the fieldhouse of Merrill Gym. Mondays or Wednesdays 7:30-9 pm in Merrill Gym Fieldhouse. Irish Step Dancing: this dance style made famous by "Riverdance" includes moves like jumping, tapping, leaping, and stretching. Various steps and routines will be taught, culminating in a new dance piece as a group. New Offering! Tue/Thur 7:30-9 pm in Dance Studio 1, Merrill Gym. Karate - Goju-Ryu: is a relatively new martial art drawing from many traditions and martial skills from the japanese. It teaches the student control over power, to be flexible and adapt to new situations. Students should come dressed fro physical activity. Mon/Wed 8:45-10 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym. Kickboxing: this is a challenging workout that features aerobic conditioning using martial arts movements. Tue/Thur 4:30-5:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym. Racquetball: all skills, game rules and strategies will be taught for the singles and doubles game. Equipment is provided. Mon/Wed 11-11:50 am in Merrill Gym. Self Defense 101: students will learn how to effectively defend themselves in a short amount of time. True self-defense begins with your mind and incorporates martial arts systems from Karate, Muay-Thai, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. No special clothing is required but students should come prepared to exercise. Mon/Wed 7:30-8:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym. Squash: Students will be taught proper techniques of playing softball squash, along with the rules of the game. Equipment will be provided. Classes for the first half of the semester will be held in Merrill Gym, with the last half at the Bates Squash Center. Transportation will be provided. Tue/Thur 11 am - 11:50 am at Merrill Gym. Step Dance: New Offering! This new exciting class is based in interlocking rhythms and unison dancing. Step dancers have begun competing internationally. Students do not need any prior experience but just an excitment to try something new! Wednesdays 8-9:30 pm, Dance Studio 1, Merrill Gym. Strength Training, Co-ed: Students will be taught proper techniques for all equipment in the Davis Fitness Center. Specialized programs will be designed for each participant. Mon/Wed 10-10:50 am in the Davis Fitness Center, Underhill Arena. Stroke Development: EARLY morning class for those who want to get their workout completed before the day starts! This class provides technical instruction to improve your swim strokes or learn new ones. Tue/Thur 6:45-7:45 am Tarbell Pool in Merrill Gym. Tennis: for beginners and intermediate players. Proper techniques, singles, doubles, and rules of the game will be taught. Equipment will be provided. Students must wear non-marking tennis or basketball sneakers; no cross trainers or running shoes are allowed! Tue/Thur 9:30-10:20 am at Wallach Tennis Center. Wiffleball: CANCELED!!! love to play the indoor game? Join this class to improve your skills and have a great time exercising! Comfortable clothes and sneakers are required. All equipment is provided. Tue/Thur 8:30-9:20 am in Gray Cage. Yoga - Kripalu Yoga: 2 separate classes.are offered. You'll learn breathing exercises, stretches, postures and posture flows to reduce anxiety and stress, and increase flexibility. strength, endurance and energy. Classes end with a relaxation period, leaving you calm, centered, awake and aware. Students must weart comfortable clothes and are encouraged to bring a towel; a yoga mat will be provided. Class Fee: $25. Instructor: Alice Ruvane. Tuesdays or Wednesdays Noon-1:30 pm in the PE Room, Merrill Gym. Zumba: a fitness class that combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow. The name Zumba is derived from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun. Inspired by Latin dance and music, Zumba uses a variety of styles in its routines, including salsa, meringue, cumbia, reggaeton, hip-hop, pop, and dancehall.
