An annual favorite, this concert features original and improvised music by multi-instrumentalists Peter Jones, Jesse Manno, Terrence Karn and Shamou; pianists Christian Cherry, Carl Landa and Mike Vargas; cellist and vocalist Robert Een; and percussionists Gilles Obermayer and Manuel Wandji. Bates Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series: Maine's Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian, aka Al Gardner, is a virtuoso on the ancient stringed instrument called the oud. Bardezbanian and his band perform Armenian, Arabic, Greek and Turkish music from folk and classical traditions. Free admission; bring blankets or lawn chairs, as well as a picnic supper.

Festival participants of all ages and abilities perform modern, jazz and integrated works by Doug Varone, Sara Pearson, Patrik Widrig, Nancy Cranbourne and Jane Weiner. Also: new work by the Community Dance Project, directed by Judy Smith in collaboration with composer-percussionist Shamou and members of the local multi-abled community.
