2002 Field Hockey

The Bates College field hockey team will have one of its biggest challenges to overcome in 2002. After reaching the postseason three straight years for the first time in program history, the Bobcats were unable to continue the streak last year, finishing with a 2-11 record.

The Bobcats were led by two-time Regional All-American Johie Farrar '03 (West Paris, Maine). Farrar was second in the NESCAC in 2001 with 12 goals, the highest single-season total at Bates in more than 10 years. Farrar had finished second on the team in each of her previous two seasons. In 2001, she recorded a school-record four goals in one half against conference foe Tufts and tallied both goals in a 2-0 shutout of Trinity. Farrar managed goals in eight of the Bobcats' 13 games.

Two of Farrar's teammates earned Regional All-America honors as sophomores. Julia Price '03 (Mansfield, Mass.) the 2002 captain, is the team's active leader in assists, with 15. Price was second on the team in scoring last year after two straight seasons of finishing third. Classmate Kathrene Tiffany '03 (Boston, Mass.) is recognized as one of the toughest midfielders in New England, earning first-team Regional All-America honors in 2000. Junior Lori Jessup '04 (Hatboro, Pa.) will also help the squad with a return to her 2000 form, when she led the team in scoring with six goals and an assist.
