Defense was the hallmark of the 2001 Bates College women's soccer team. The Bobcats posted a remarkable six straight shutouts midway through the season. Three of those wins came against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes, including 2000 NCAA finalists Tufts. The Bobcats ranked 15th in the nation in shutouts per game (0.60). With all but one of their starting defenders back in 2002, the defense should continue to be staunch.
While coach Jim Murphy's squad will have to contend with the loss of graduating second-team All-NESCAC forward Kate Dockery '02, the league's third-leading scorer in 2001, two other All-Conference performers are back. Senior tri-captain Krissie Whiting earned her second All-NESCAC berth, making the first team in 2001 after earning a second-team spot as a sophomore. Whiting's 12 goals and 30 points are tops among returning players. Junior back Catherine Crosby not only anchored Bates' stellar defense, she was also the team's second leading point scorer with five goals and five assists. Senior goalkeeper Kim Martell has started all 48 games for the Bobcats in the past three seasons. The Bobcats boasted a young roster last season, with 16 of 24 players coming from the sophomore or first-year class. Rookie forward Katie Carroll '05 was the team's top scoring threat from that group, tallying six goals over the season, trailing only Dockery.
