Past President, Early Medieval China Group (Association for Asian Studies affiliate organization)

As the first full-time East Asia specialist hired by Bates in a permanent position, I have ranged in my courses over Northeast, East and Southeast Asian history and culture. With the expansion of the College's resources in this area, and the recent inauguration of the Asian Studies Program, my courses currently focus on the history of China and Korea. My interests are in how complex societies actually function, and how they describe themselves in their art and literature.
