1. Seeds of Peace president delivers Convocation address
Aaron David Miller, who advised six U.S. secretaries of state on the Middle East during the past two decades and who this year became president of the international organization Seeds of Peace, opened the 149th academic year Sept. 3 at Bates with the Convocation address, "Arab-Israeli Peace: Is It Still Possible?" www.bates.edu/x39526.xml

2. Bates receives strong ratings in national publications
National college guides and magazines continue to rank Bates College among the best liberal arts colleges in the nation. www.bates.edu/x41733.xml

3. Liberal arts education ideal for business and finance
In a Sept. 2 letter to the editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Bates President Elaine Tuttle Hansen argues that liberal arts colleges need to do a better job of communicating what executives who hire liberal-arts graduates already know. www.bates.edu/x41921.xml

4. That high-yield Bates bond
With the Treasury Department's August auction of T-notes fast approaching, the producers of The Money Gang, a CNN Financial Network program, hunted for an expert who could give a little zip to the eyelid-drooping topic of bond investing. Producer Jeff Mutterperl '92 had done his homework, albeit in an unlikely spot -- Bates Magazine class notes. www.bates.edu/x41760.xml

5. Revolutionary discussion for Homecoming
On Saturday, Sept. 20, Professor Lewis Turlish will lead a book discussion on "Revolutionary Road" by Richard Yates. We invite you to read the book in the coming weeks and join us for a discussion on campus during Homecoming weekend. To order a copy of the book and for more information about Homecoming Weekend visit: www.bates.edu/homecoming-2003.xml

6. Scoreboard dedicated in McDuffee's memory
The Bates community will gather during Homecoming Weekend to remember and celebrate the life of Morgan W. McDuffee '02. The College will dedicate a scoreboard in McDuffee's memory, followed by a spirited alumni lacrosse game on the Campus Avenue Field, adjacent to John Bertram Hall. The dedication is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday. The alumni lacrosse game will immediately follow at 4:30. All alumni, parents, and friends are welcome to attend. For more information on the alumni lacrosse game, contact Peter Lasagna, head men's lacrosse coach, at plasagna@bates.edu or tel. (207) 786-8263. For a complete schedule of Homecoming events, visit www.bates.edu/homecoming-2003.xml.

7. Corey Harris '91 explores the blues on national television
The Blues, a seven-part public television series, begins Sept. 28 with director Martin Scorsese"s "Feel Like Going Home," featuring musician Corey Harris '91 as he travels through Mississippi and on to West Africa, exploring the roots of the Delta blues. The film celebrates the early Delta bluesmen through original performances, including Willie King, Taj Mahal, Otha Turner and Ali Farka Toure and rare archival footage featuring Son House, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

8. First solo U.S. exhibition by famed Cuban artist at art museum
Manuel Lopez Oliva: Cuba and the Theatre of Desire, the first solo U.S. exhibition by one of Cuba's most famous and accomplished artists, is at the Bates College Museum of Art through Oct. 5. www.bates.edu/x41686.xml

9. Community gardens flourish for Bates senior
Pole beans, cukes and tomatoes are among the things that Rachel Booty '04 and a group of local teenagers grow in downtown Lewiston. They grow youthful aspirations, leadership skills and neighborhood spirit, too. Scion of a farming family in Sandwich, N.H., Booty has put her agricultural experience to work for Lots to Gardens, a Lewiston-based nonprofit founded in 1998 by another Bates student, Kirsten Walter. Booty -- who is as passionate about civic involvement as she is about raising food -- is the youth coordinator for the program, which uses gardening projects to strengthen community. www.bates.edu/x41759.xml

10. Fulbright award to support research in Vietnam
Trian Nguyen, assistant professor of art and Luce Junior Professor of Asian Studies at Bates, has received a $28,000 Fulbright award to support a year of research and writing to advance his study of Vietnamese portrait sculptures from the 15th through the 18th centuries. www.bates.edu/x41851.xml

11. Bates People in the News
National Public Radio talked with Frank Coffin '40, a federal judge who headed a committee investigating the effects of low pay scales on the public defender system. Also on the airwaves, Assistant Professor of History Lillian Guerra went on Pacifica Radio to discuss the mood of the Cuban people 50 years after the start of Castro's revolution. Meanwhile, Oliver Wolf '06 spoke for conservative students in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report. www.bates.edu/bates-in-the-news.xml

12. Thanks, in advance, for the memories
The folks in Communications and Media Relations who create the annual Bates wall calendar would like to consider concise alumni memories of specific months, or seasons, at Bates. For example, "September at Bates means..." or "Springtime at Bates brings to mind..." Any particular seasonal memories come to mind? Please share them! Send to: bmcnulty@bates.edu.
