Members of the Communications and Media Relations team communicate vital information about the College to internal and external audiences, and assist journalists with questions regarding the College. The director is Bryan McNulty (bmcnulty@bates.edu)
The main goals of the office are to:
- Articulate the themes and messages that are part of the vision for Bates.(www.bates.edu/ip-vision-for-bates.xml)
- Describe Bates' distinctive strengths for: alumni, prospective students, friends, news media, opinion leaders in higher education, and the general public.
- Provide strategic direction to administration, faculty, and staff in effective interaction with stakeholders and key audiences.
- Engage the resources of the office in marketing Bates' strengths to the College's constituents on campus and off.
- Integrate Bates' communications/public relations efforts through media relations, publications, and the Internet.

- Editing/copy-editing of many CMR publications, including but not limited to Admissions Updates and Parent & Family Connection (with Phyllis consulting), Web pages, the Student Handbook, the Parent & Family Handbook, the college Catalog, and college Directory. Copy editing as requested for sports press releases and Viewbook. Trustees news clip compilation. Lead editor for the monthly calendar in print and online.

- Develops and implements strategic marketing and communication plans for Advancement, Admissions, President's Office, Dean of Students, and Dean of Faculty
- Creates images that drive communications for major marketing and stewardship pieces
- Creates images that articulate the institutional identity
- Works closely with Media Relations writers/editors, and photographer
