The Bates ski team is consistently one of the most successful programs at the College, finishing among the top-20 in the nation for seven straight years, including 2003’s 16th-place finish.
While All-America Nordic skier and Bates Male Athlete of the Year Justin Easter '03 has graduated, the team returns a solid nucleus led by Seth Hubbard '06 (Farmington, Maine) and Daniel Johnson '06 (Detroit Lakes, Minn.).
The women's Nordic team will miss the services of Haley Johnson '04 (Lake Placid, N.Y.), whose win in the 10-kilometer freestlye at last year's Williams Winter Carnival made her the first woman at Bates to ever win an event at a carnival. Johnson is taking this year off to study abroad. She finished 17th in the women's 5K at the NCAA Championship at Dartmouth and finished in the top-10 in all but two events during the carnival season.
Both Kat Bennett '03 and Jane Marshall '03 have graduated, but captain Abbie Harris '04 (Derby Line, Vt.), a point scorer last year at the end of the season, will look to transfer that to the 2004 season and help guide a strong contingent of newcomers, many of which are state champions from Maine.
Bates’ training and competition facilities are among the best in New England. The alpine team trains and races at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine, while the Nordic team has a home course at Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine. In March 1999, Bates hosted the NCAA championships at these home courses. The Lewiston-Auburn area boasts several trails close to campus for in-season training. Campus and the surrounding area offer challenging terrain for dry-land training.
