2002-2003 Women's Squash

The 2003-04 Bates College women's squash team enters the season with high expectations after finishing 10th in the nation for the second consecutive season. The 9-8 Bobcats also reached the finals of the "B" flight of the Howe Cup for the second straight season. Top newcomer Melissa Lue Yen '05 (Kingston, Jamaica) helped lead the team, despite joining the squad almost halfway through the season, to a fourth-place finish among NESCAC schools.

The Bobcats will benefit from having Lue Yen for a full year, and expect her to guide the team all season.  Talbot Randall '03 posted the team's best record, 8-2, playing primarily as the No. 9 player. Head coach John Illig has the majority of his squad back again for the 2003-04 season.  Sarah Persing '05 (Madison, Conn.) has experience at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Liza Roberts '06 (Andover, Mass.) posted a 9-8 record playing anywhere from No. 2 to No. 4. She, along with Lue Yen and Jenny Loring '05 (Beverly Farms, Mass.), participated in the Individual National Championships last year. Another key returnee for Illig will be captain Kristen Brush '04 (Pomfret, Conn.). Also expected to contribute is first-year Schuyler Haynes '07 (Philadelphia, Pa.).

The Bobcat schedule is even more competitive than last season's. On top of the Ivy League and NESCAC teams, Bates will also travel to Jamaica to train. Bates posted a pair of 9-0 wins during the season and two more by 8-1 margins.
