The Bates College Center for Service-Learning joins the Lewiston Housing Authority's Youth Enrichment Opportunity Program in displaying the art work of 36 students in an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, in Chase Hall, Campus Avenue, Bates College. The public is invited to attend free of charge. The exhibition will continue through Dec. 5. For more information, call 207-786-8273 or 207-783-8539. A visual and performing arts program funded with Section 8 Reserves of the Lewiston Housing Authority and a Federal Drug Elimination Grant, the 12-year-old Y.E.O.P. is dedicated to the promotion of the arts for youth (ages 5-18) who live in the Lewiston Housing Authority's public housing. The program builds self-esteem through the process of learning, performing and exhibiting. The LHA student artists study with Y.E.O.P. art coordinator Sissi Ventrone, a veteran Auburn- and Norway-based art teacher. Tailoring the program to her students' individual abilities, she teaches students in mixed age groups so that older children serve as role models for younger ones. The Bates show is important for her students, says Ventrone. "All artists must develop the courage to exhibit in public." - Phyllis Graber Jensen, Office of Communications and Media Relations |
