John Kelsey is a Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Neuroscience Program and has been at Bates since 1979. His main research interests are in the environmental, anatomical, and neurochemical bases of rodent models of abnormal behaviors. In particular, he and his students are interested in the role of learning and the brain structures involved in a variety of behaviors reflective of drug addiction, such as locomotor sensitization and conditioned place preference. They also examine the neuroanatomical and neuropharmacological bases of the forepaw stepping deficits produced by unilateral injections of 6-OHDA in a rodent model of Parkinson's disease. Finally, they examine the physiological determinants of the positive, negative, and cognitive deficits produced in two rodent models of schizophrenia, the phencyclidine (PCP) model and the medial prefrontal cortical 6-OHDA lesion model.
