Friday, Jan. 16,
1-2 p.m.

The Bates College education department and the Center for Service-Learning, along with the University of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College, sponsor an annual Martin Luther King Day Read-In at Martel School in Lewiston. Volunteer students, staff, faculty  and members of the community are encouraged to participate. Readers will share a book with a diversity theme with a 4th-, 5th- or 6th-grade student. The book will then be the child's to keep. Martel students will have drawings and pictures of their own to share, and this art will be on display in the Bates College Chapel during the Jan. 18 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service.

Carpools will leave the Center for Service-Learning, 161 Wood Street, at 1 p.m. A brief orientation will be held in the Martel School Library. Readers will read with students from 1:15-2 p.m.

For more information, or to sign up, contact mdeschai@bates.edu or phone 207-786-8273. Please indicate if you are willing to transport others.
