January 14, 2004

Baker qualified for NCAA's last season, but was forced to miss the national championship meet due to a severe case of mono.

LEWISTON, Maine – Erik Baker and Vanessa Williamson were each honored by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference for their performances for the Bates swimming and diving team on Tuesday afternoon.

Baker '06 (Hamden, Conn.) was named the ECAC Division III Men's Diver of the Week. Baker set school and pool records in the 1-meter diving event against Norwich on Saturday with a score of 315.10. The score broke the mark of 311.20, set by Andrew Hastings on January 13, 2001.

Baker has posted NCAA qualifying scores off both the 1- and 3-meter diving boards this season. He is undefeated in dual meets off either board, winning 10 events in five meets.

Williamson '05 (Auburn, Maine) was named the ECAC Division III Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Williamson broke a pair of pool records in Sunday’s meet with Middlebury. She broke her own two-year old pool record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.35, beating her previous best performance in Tarbell Pool by .15 seconds. Later in the meet, she snapped a 20-year old record in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:03.01, beating the previous record by three-tenths of a second.

Williamson has posted NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 100 and 200 fly this season, winning 11 of 12 individual events and contributing to three winning relays in five meets.

The Bobcats continue the season this weekend, facing Babson at Babson Park, Mass.
