Q: Some commons favorites: fried tofu w/ mushroom sauce, balsamic roasted vegetables, butternut/acorn squash, asparagus, balsamic spinach, grilled chicken subs w/ sauces, broccoli and cheese filled chicken - it would be wonderful if one night we could have steamed artichokes and avocados available once in a while as well. Also, I haven't seen the stuffed sole in a long time - where did it go? A big thank you to all commons employees who work so hard and make me smile every day. You're the best!
A: Thanks for writing. We just had stuffed sole for lunch today.

Q: I love the napkin board, a place where the Bates community can ask questions and get answers. Of course, it's pretty much limited to food-service issues. Are there other places where we can enjoy the same give-and-take on a wider range of Bates-related topics? (I suspect the administration won't risk open discussion on other topics, but I just thought I'd ask.)
A: Not sure if there is , but I will forward this to those in the know.

Q: I really enjoyed the variety of sauces that were served in Commons, either on Wed or Thurs night. They were really great. In particular, I enjoyed the sweet and sour and then there was the slightly spicy one that really did it for me.
A: Thanks!

Q: I was wondering what the other burger is in the vegan refrigerator. I like the Gardenburger Veggie burger, but what is the one that looks more like meat? Is that also made by gardenburger and what exactly isit .. i havent tried it yet!!
A: It is the Gardenburger Flame Grilled. This is a vegan product made made with soybeans form non-genetically modified plants.
February 11, 2004:
Q: i was wondering if you could tell me what the ingredients are in the veggie burgers which are in the vegan refrigerator (the veggie ones that have particles of onion, green pepper carrots etc.). Also if you could tell me the nutrition facts and what brand you buy b/c they are really good!
A: The item you are referring to is the Veggie Vegan Burger made by Gardenburger. It is my understanding that this item can be purchased at most any large grocery stores.

Q: I was thinking of how to make the Den infinitely better...milkshakes. You guys already have a softserve machine to make simple milkshakes (or you could go all-out with hardpack ice cream). All you'd need would be a single or a double milkshake blender!
A: Great idea, but we no longer have a soft serve machine in the Den. Perhaps I can come up with an alternative.

Q: the straw supply is running out, or is probably even gone by now, could you refill it? I don't like slurping through ice. Thanks!
A: No problem.

Q: something about the egg salad was changed and I'm not sure what it was but it's just not as good anymore. It's kinda more sweet now. Egg salad is a staple food in my lunch diet, can we get the good egg salad back?
A: It has changed. We have started making it with the fat free mayo.

Q: I know the logistics of serving Tacos for dinner is really hard, but you guys can do it. I have faith in you. Everyone knows that Tacos are a dinner food too! Best of luck. Oh yeah, what was the deal with having chicken fajitas for lunch and then chicken subs for dinner? I like both of those, but not on the same day. Keep up the good work. Oh yeah, less onions in your red sauces. Thanks for the beef hotdogs!
A: Let me see what I can do. Thanks for writing.

Q: that flourless chocolate cake was super BOMB dankness....can we have it every night?
A: Thanks I will let the bakers know
February 10, 2004:
Q: Good job on the Saturday night dinners! I've noticed the changes and have appreciated them. The vegetable fried rice is especially good. Thanks for keeping us all well-fed. And Boo to all the unappreciative and disrespectful students who expect food cooked for 1500 people to taste like Mommy's cooking.
A: Thanks for your kind words
February 09, 2004:
Q: I was in the Den for the state of the union address thurs 1/29. The all-you-can eat pizza bar was great. I really like that type of pizza over the usual den pizza. Is that an usual event? Could Pablo make that kind of pizza in commons sometimes instead of the "cracker" pizza?
A: No problem.
February 03, 2004:
Q: I was wondering if you could get Kashi Crunch cereal. I know this means you would have to replace another cereal, but I feel like a lot of people would prefer this over a lot of the other options available. Do we really need Wheaties when we have Total? Who eats Fiber One?
A: Besides having to get rid of another cereal, at this point Kashi does not come bulk packed. As soon as it does, we can look into the option. Thanks for writing.

Q: i, I've seen a lot of napkins asking for nuts lately, and I would really like them too. Dining services seems to say "no nuts" because there are lots of people with food allergies. Perhaps we can have nuts by the peanut butter--which people have allergies to as well--or in a container like the one that contains the sunflower seeds. I'm sure it's possible to accomodate nut lovers and people with allergies at the same time. It's great that you guys are watching out for people's allergies, but some people are allergic to virtually everything. Good labeling and sanitary procedures (which you already use very well) can make nuts available without compromising those with allergies.
A: You are correct that good labeling and sanitation go a long way to preventing food allergies, but just this past weekend an individual who is allergic to nuts, ate an item-which was labeled "Contains Nuts" and had a severe reaction. I have been in touch with other institutions to see how they handle this issue and found out that Bowdoin is in fact "Nut Free". For the immediate future , I do not see us putting out nuts in bulk. Sorry.

Q: hi. i was just wondering what brand of granola you use in the cereal bar?
A: Kellogs low fat.
February 2, 2004:
Q: Is the cottage cheese in the salad bar made with whole milk, or is it low fat? If its not low fat (or skim), can we get some? >Thanks.
A: Low fat
