2003 Softball

Fifth-year head coach Gwen Lexow will look to an experienced group of returning players to rebuild a successful future for the Bates softball team this spring. She will have plenty of experience returning for the 2004 season with shortstop Erin Foye '05, second base Amanda Beck '04, catcher Cami Dyson '04 and outfielders Andrea Lichtman '06, Sarah Levine '04 and Dayna Krakower '05. Foye led the team with a .356 batting average and the team's only home run. Dyson hit .312 despite missing four games due to injury. She already holds the school record for career doubles (22) and is close to setting two more career marks. Sarah Klenakis '05 is the lone returnee in the circle. Lexow did lose centerfielder Krissie Whiting was lost to graduation. She holds four school career records and finished with 20 wins in the circle. Also lost to graduation were first base Carla Flaherty, third base Brooke Tardiff, and pitcher Ginger Walsh, who holds school career records in appearances (59) and starts (52).

The Bobcats begin practice inside the Gray Athletic Building and on Bates' AstroTurf field following a February training trip to Florida, where the Bobcats train and play four to six games against teams from other NCAA regions.  The intense New England schedule runs from mid-March to mid-May, with as many as 20 dates scheduled.  Bates competes against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponents and other top New England rivals like St. Joseph’s College and the University of Southern Maine.  Home contests are played at the modern softball facility that features dugouts, bullpens, an electronic scoreboard, and outdoor batting tunnel.
