Baker Fifth in 1-Meter Dive, 20th off 3-Meter Board at NCAA Championships

Erik Baker finished fifth in the 1-meter diving event at the 2004 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Principia College on Thursday night. He added a 20th-place finish off the 3-meter board on Saturday to wrap up an outstanding sophomore season.

Baker '06 (Hamden, Conn.) earned his first All-America award with the finish and became the sixth Bates student-athlete to earn All-America status in the last two weeks with his finish in the 1-meter event.

Baker posted the sixth-best score with a 373.35 in the preliminary round to advance to the championship final, then moved up a spot to fifth with a 414.10. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Joel Meyer won the event by nearly 20 points with a score of 479.30.

On Saturday, Baker scored 333.10 points in the preliminary round, less than seven points away from qualifying for the consolation final.

Baker scored 14 team points in the 1-meter dive, and Bates finished in a tie for 40th in the team standings.
