2004-05 Program Notes

The Bates College women's squash program gives student-athletes the opportunity to compete against the top collegiate competition in the nation. Student-athletes with a proven academic background and a tenacious attitude on the squash court should consider applying to Bates.

The majority of the season consists of dual matches, most vs. traditional New England Small College Athletic Conference and Ivy League rivals. Team members also have the opportunity to play in individual tournaments. The team portion of the season culminates with the Howe Cup Team National Championships, followed by the College Squash Association Individual National Championships two weeks later.

2003-04 Recap and 2004-05 Outlook
The Bobcats claimed the Kurtz Cup for the first time in program history in 2004, beating Amherst 5-4 to win the B flight at the Howe Cup. Bates was the highest ranked team in Maine after finishing the season 6-0 in matches against Bowdoin and Colby. The Bobcats finished the season ranked ninth nationally, a program best, marking the third consecutive year Bates has been one of the nation's top-10 teams.

Bates used a deep lineup to win most of its matches, with No. 4 through No. 9 in the lineup posting a combined .755 winning percentage. The team won its final 10 matches to finish the season 14-3.

The Bobcats should remain in the nation's top 10 and will look to move into the A flight at the 2005 Howe Cup after losing just one senior to graduation. Melissa Lue Yen '06 (Kingston, Jamaica) returns as the team's top player, while Liza Roberts '06 (Andover, Mass.), Schuyler Haynes '07 (Bacova, Va.) and Sarah Persing '05 (Madison, Conn.) will continue to give Bates one of the deepest lineups in the country.
