Jessup Scores 100th, But Connecticut College Beats Bobcats, 14-11

2004 LEWISTON, Maine – Bates senior Lori Jessup scored her 100th career goal to trim Connecticut College's lead to one with less than seven minutes to play, but the Camels responded with the next three goals to beat the Bobcats 14-11 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game on Saturday morning on Campus Avenue Field. The teams traded the lead for the first 25 minutes of the game, with neither able to build more than a one-goal advantage. Bates took a 5-4 lead when Erica Nason '05 (Concord, N.H.) scored her 17th of the season with less than six minutes in the half. The Camels, however, closed the half with a 4-0 run to lead 8-5 at halftime. Bates cut the lead to one three times in the second half, with Jessup '04 (Hatboro, Pa.) giving Bates the momentum with her 21st goal of the season with 6:34 to play. Maggie Driscoll restored the two-goal lead for Connecticut College just over three minutes later, and Molly Charest gave the Camels a 13-10 lead less than a minute later. Christine Cunha led Connecticut College with three goals and an assist. Molly McConaty and Charest each scored two goals for the Camels, who improved to 3-5, 1-4 NESCAC. Nason led Bates with three goals. Jessup and Liz Greenwood '07 (Williamstown, Mass.) each added two goals and an assist, and Becky Castle '04 (Stonington, Conn.) and Allison Marshall '07 (Princeton, N.J.) each scored two goals. Paige Diamond made 14 saves for the Camels, and Liz McNamara '05 (Plainfield, N.H.) also stopped 14 shots for Bates, which fell to 4-6, 0-5 NESCAC. Bates was without both senior captains Carrie Smith '04 (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Lizzie Anson '04 (Scarborough, Maine) due to injury. Bates will face Gordon in a non-league game on Monday in Wenham, Mass., at 4 p.m. |
